It is possible that humans have inhabited this area since the Stone Age but the city we now call York was founded in AD71 when the Romans sent soldiers up to keep the local tribes in order. In Saxon times, the city flourished and the original wooden Minster was replaced with a stone version. The Normans managed to destroy that when they came up north, to beat up the locals like the Romans 1000 years earlier! They were kind enough to rebuild it though.
Nowadays, the only invaders are the tourists and companies sending their staff on a fun and enjoyable team build day or corporate entertainment event - with the great rail links to York from almost any of the major UK cities, why not join them?
