A small town, linked inextricably with William Shakespeare and a perfect venue for our unique corporate events treasure hunt, as a team building exercise, employee reward or client incentive. Alternatively, our Stag and Hen hunts are perfect for individuals and they are available in self-managed format.
Stratford-upon-Avon is essentially a rural market town with a high concentration of fabulous architecture and history. Nearby, Ann Hathaway's cottage is a 'chocolate box' building which was carefully restored after a fire in 1969. The cottage was Newland's Farm in the time of Shakespeare but nowadays it is simply known by the pre-marital name of Shakespeare's wife. Mary Arden was the mother of Shakespeare and her home also is still in existence, the structure being preserved by a stucco coating, added by a previous owner.
The town has it's origins in Saxon times but the present day layout is heavily influenced by the fact that it was set out 'new town' style in medieval times. The town charter dates back to the end of the 12th century. The area that became this medieval town (set out on a grid pattern, Roman style) was part of the lands of the Bishop of Worcester and was known as 'Strete Forde', reflecting the fact that this was the point where the Roman Road from Banbury met and crossed the Avon. In 1196, the Bishop obtained a charter from Richard I (Richard the Lionheart) to hold a weekly market in order to raise some cash for them both.
At the time of Shakespeare (and beyond), Stratford was a major sheep trading and processing centre for the Cotswolds. In fact there was a significant tannery industry here for a couple of hundred years. The problems that blight towns today existed in the times of Shakespeare too - see http://www.stratford-upon-avon.co.uk/soahstry.htm for reports on parking problems, fights and racism issues).
A couple of hundred years after the Birth of William Shakespeare - in the 18th century Garrick built what is believed to be the first theatre in Stratford. It was just a temporary thing built for the Jubilee celebrations of 1769. The building that was to become more permanent and honoured The Bard was built in the 1870s. When that burnt down in the 1920s, production was transferred temporarily to the cinema, until the replacement was opened in the early 30s. Now the main industry for Stratford is tourism.
Stratford is a massive cultural centre, naturally based on the great Bard but it plays host to an annual poetry festival. As it is the home of the Royal Shakespeare company, you can drink in the same pubs as some very famous actors indeed (and don't the pubs let you know it!). You will hopefully have time to see some of this heritage on the day of the treasure hunt (but not during the treasure hunt as you will be too busy looking for answers to the clues!).
So, instead of following the usual town trail, follow our treasure hunt and you may just see a Jester, a market building that has become a bank, a sculpture that celebrates the 800th anniversary of the town and of course, the Trading Post ... but what was the original function of that building?
