Shrewsbury Treasure or Scavenger Hunt ...

Shrewsbury may have been established as long ago as Roman times but its main development in times past came in the middle ages. The current town centre still follows the medieval layout and so gives a historical and entertaining location for your treasure hunt.

The first written record of Shrewsbury was early in the 10th century and it was recorded as a city in the Kingdom of Mercia. It became the county town of Shrewsbury and even had its own mint and was therefore a fortified town. According to the Wikipedia ...

... "When the Normans came to rule Shropshire in the later half of the 11th Century, they strengthened Shrewsbury's fortifications, building a stone castle where the present Shrewsbury Castle is now. The centre of Shrewsbury is located in a meander of the River Severn and the town is located only 9 miles from the Welsh border. The town centre has a pronounced hill on the north side of the meander where the neck of the meander is, upon which sits the castle, though the present day castle dates from the 13th century. There are many well-preserved half-timbered black-and-white houses here, among them the Abbot's House of c.1500 on Butcher Row, and Rowley's House (now home to the Shrewsbury Museum and Art Gallery) on Barker Street."

Shrewsbury has largely escaped industrialisation and that may well have been a major factor in the preservation of so many historic buildings. Despite that, the World's first iron framed building (Ditherington Flax Mill) was constructed here. Additionally, the '60s and 70's planners thankfully seem to have ignored the centre, which also has helped to preserve this atmoshperic and fascinating town centre - which makes this a great venue for your treasure hunt.

In common with many of the border towns, Shrewsbury has had its share of bloodshed over the centuries. Many Welsh chieftains have tried to capture the town. Dafydd_ap_Gruffydd, the last free Welsh ruler of Wales was executed (hung, drawn and quartered) for high treason in Shrewsbury. During the civil war, a traitor let the attacking Parliamentarian forces in one of the city gates, since when it has unsurprisingly been called 'Traitor's Gate'.
