The earliest evidence of settlement in the Sheffield area was during the middle stone age. A couple of Bronze age artefacts left behing by the 'Beaker People' have been found on the western outskirts. But the major development came during the Industrial Revolution during which the cutlery industry and steelmaking industries became dominant. The inventor of the Bessemer Process for steelmaking opened a steelworks in Sheffield; Sheffield Plate was a form of silver plating which was discovered here; stainless steel was invented in Sheffield ... the list of achievements goes on.
