What a great location for a treasure hunt and bbq afterwards - deep in the heart of Wiltshire, the town of Malmesbury is possibly England's oldest borough, having been established in 880 AD during the reign of Alfred the Great.
It is a hilltop town, which was a natural defence. In the past the surrounding rivers were wide and deep and locals augmented these natural defences with walls, banks and stockades. This development continued well into the 17th century and was probably the reason that the town changed hands several times during the Civil War. In the last hundred years, Malmesbury has grown dramatically, just about doubling in population. Wool initially made Malmesbury a prosperous town but that gave way to other industries and in the 21st century it has become more of a commercial centre. Possibly the best known industry is Dyson, of vacuum cleaner fame.
Despite this development, a good chunk of the heritage of the town in times past remains, including some of the Abbey Church from when Malmesbury was a Monastic town. You will hopefully have time to see some of this heritage on the day of the treasure hunt (but not during the treasure hunt as you will be too busy looking for answers to the clues!). So Malmesbury, with a range of great conference venues, is just the place for your company away day or team building.
