What a great location for a treasure hunt - deep in the heart of Wiltshire, the town of Malmesbury is possibly England's oldest borough, having been established in 880 AD during the reign of Alfred the Great. It is a hilltop town, which was a natural defence. In the past the surrounding rivers were wide and deep and locals augmented these defences with walls, banks and stockades. This development continued well into the 17th century. In the last hundred years, Malmesbury has grown dramatically, just about doubling in population. Despite this development, some of the heritage of the town in times past remains, including some of the Abbey Church from when the town Malmesbury was a Monastic town. You will hopefully have time to see some of this heritage on the day of the treasure hunt (but not during the treasure hunt as you will be too busy looking for answers to the clues!). |
