Derby was granted city status as part of the Queen's Silver Jubilee celebrations and has been improving ever since. Derby has been around for centuries and was a key location for the Romans, who built the fort Derventio at Chester Green, a suburb of Derby close to an important crossing of the river Derwent. The area continued to be occupied after the Romans had left and during the English Civil War the Derby garrison of Parliamentary troops took part in several local incidents in Derbyshire, Nottinghamshire, Cheshire and Staffordshire. In the Jacobean uprising of 1745, Bonnie Prince Charlie led his army southwards, reaching Derby in December of that year. Owing to information that an army was heading up from the south, his generals persuaded him to head back to Scotland. It is believed that he turned back at Swarkestone bridge, just south of Derby.

Derby is reputed to be the most haunted city in the UK with many tales of ghostly sightings.
