Dartmouth has its roots in prehistoric times and has played a big part in the seafaring history of the UK. Now it can play its part in your history by providing you with the venue for a memorable event ...
The area of Dartmouth has been settled since prehistoric times, the earliest occupation having been found in the area of Townstal, now effectively on the outskirts. Rather than settle right alongside the river, the earliest Dartmouth inhabitants built their homes a short distance from the river and up the hill. Basically, it was safer - the ground was less boggy any invaders had to run up the hill from the estuary of the river Dart to attack, which gave perhaps a few vital extra minutes. Hill or no hill, during your treasure hunt you will not have any extra minutes, your team needs to be well organised in order to complete as many clues as possible and to get back on time.
The present town is a fantastic mixture of architecture, narrow streets lined with medieval buildings, the Naval College plus plenty to do and see on a company away day or stag/hen do. The main development of Dartmouth came in the middle ages when the French realised that the estuary of the river Dart provided the perfect harbour from which they could cross to Normandy. In fact, within a very short time, Darmouth habour had reached such an advanced state of development that is was possible to rally over a hundred ships and crews to head off to the second and third Crusades. A local character, John Hawley, was a colourful character who may have been the model for one of Chaucer's Canterbury Tales. In any event, Hawley was the Mayor of Dartmouth (and a privateer during the Hundred Year's War) who constructed two castles to protect Dartmouth from invasion. The English Explorer Gilbert (tried and failed to find the 'North West Passage') was born in Dartmouth and lived in the local mansion Greenway House. Gilbert did however claim Newfoundland for England and developed a trade that lasted for over 400 years. Many Dartmouth men emigrated to Newfoundland to be part of the cod processing industry.
Dartmouth raised a number of ships and men to defend England from the Spanish Armada and even captured the flagship which was then moored in the estuary and the crew used as slaves! It is recorded that the Pilgrim Fathers set sail for the New World from Southampton, but thesy stopped and rested for some time at Dartmouth prior to launching out into the unknown.
