Bristol is a thriving, vibrant university city with a maritime heritage.
In the 18th century, Bristol was the second largest port in England. Although the bustle of international trade is long gone, the dock area is used mainly for leisure and recreation but despite this, the essential character remains. Bristol was a port long before that, in Saxon times, it was noted as being a port that traded with Ireland. The expression 'shipshape and Bristol fashion' is not heard much these days, it is believed to refer to the fact that Bristol built ships were tough and everything was carefully stowed because the tides of the river Avon are particularly high and demanding on the structure of ships that were docked there.
Further inland, the Avon is spanned by the famed Clifton Suspension Bridge. Designed by the Victorian engineer Isambard Kingdom Brunel, this impressive construction was finished in 1864 with a span of over 200 metres and almost 80 metres above high water level. Sadly, Brunel died before seeing this work completed. Probably the best known story of the bridge is that of a Victorian girl had a bit of a spat with her boyfriend and decided to end it all. So she jumped off. Thanks to a combination of billowing petticoats acting as a parachute and thick gloopy mud, she survived!
We also have a Bristol Zoo treasure hunt. The Zoo was made famous by the TV series 'Animal Magic' which ran from the early 1960s to the mid 1980s. But that is not the only TV claim to fame for Bristol ... parts of 'Only Fools and Horses', The anarchic series 'the Young Ones', can anyone remember the detective series Shoestring? That was based here in Bristol too. The game show 'Deal or no Deal' is filmed here and the hugely successful series 'Casualty' was filmed in and around Bristol ... it is also pretty much the world centre for natural history fil making and is the base for the BBC's Natural History Unit. The city has also attracted feature film makers too ... the amusing and slightly sad 'Starter for Ten' was about a Bristol University student who was determined to be on University Challenge - even more so when one of the other team members was a rather attractive girl!

Your Bristol Treasure Hunt ...
The Bristol treasure hunt takes place either on foot in Bristol itself or by car, to the south of the city, where you will explore the local villages in order to find the answers and complete the tasks.
