Another top location for a treasure hunt - explore the heart of the City of Bath, spa town with famous hot springs that have been popular on and off from Roman times. Our treasure hunts will take you to the most popular parts of Bath as well as some of the lesser known, but equally fascinating, places.
Bath as a significant settlement began in Roman times. Prior to that, it was probably a swampy and steamy place. There is a legent that a prince named Bladud contracted leprosy but was cured after he had bathed in the hot muddy water in the area, He celebrated this by founding the City of Bath around the hot springs something like 900 years before the Romans. Back to reality - the documented foundation of Bath was in AD43 as 'Aquae Sulis'. It was not a garrison town, it was designed for R and R for the Roman Legionnaires (and for healing as the temple to Aesculopius suggests). The springs were channelled into a bath house surrounded by flagstones and given an air of grandeur, Roman style 30 to 40 years later, leaving us with the spectacular remains of today.
When the Romans left, the buildings became run down and the main bath eventually became roofless. Bath needed rebuilding at one point in the 11th century after an attack destroyed much of it. The three Roman baths survived. More recently, The Royal Crescent, The Circus and Pultney Bridge were constructed when 'taking the waters' became popular in Georgian times. Possibly the best example of late 18th century architecture in this city, renowned nowadays for Georgian architecture, is the Grand Pump Room, near the Roman Bath complex. Warm spa water flows constantly from a fountain on the south side of the room, and visitors are still offered the opportunity to 'take the waters of Bath'. Bath was also home to the William Herschel and his daughter Caroline - but maybe we'd better not tell you too much because we don't want to give you too much of a head start on the clues ...
If you are looking for team building, Bath is a great place to be. It is easily accessible so that wherever you are in the country it is not a problem to get there. The city is set in tranquil surroundings; that rubs off on your team and enables them to develop their team skills. The treasure hunt provides a great framework for any team building or corporate activity - fun, inclusive and requiring all the skills demanded from employees in a pressured workplace.
