Try an Amsterdam Treasure Hunt in Holland, for Team Building, Corporate Entertainment, Stag and Hen events ...

Another one of our great venues for a treasure hunt or scavenger hunt - explore the Dutch City of Amsterdam. Our treasure hunts will take you to the most popular parts of Amsterdam, as well as some of the lesser known but equally fascinating, places ...

Amsterdam was established in the 13th century and was granted city status early in the 14th century.

During the 15th century, the city was subjected to a couple of big fires so it was decreed that all new houses would be stone built. One notable wooden building from that era survives - the Houten Huis (literally the wooden house).

The 16th century was the time that saw Amsterdam become a cosmopolitan city with an influx of wealthy Jews from Spain and Portugal who sought refuge from religious intolerance plus Hugenots fleeing from France. The golden era began late in the 16th century and continued well into the 17th century. Merchants financed expeditions and that led to the creation of the Dutch colonies, Amsterdam was the world financial centre and the main centre for trans-shipment of goods throughout Europe. The city also expanded greatly around its famous canals. It was also, like London, hit badly by the plague in the 1660's.

Amsterdam declined in importance during the next 2 centuries but continued to see immigration, mainly from Germany this time. Wars with the UK and the Napoleonic Wars did not help, however things looked up after the conclusion of the latter, after the establishment of the Kingdom of the Netherlands. The Industrial revolution perked up Amsterdam's fortunes right at the end of the 19th century, despite almost weekly riots about working conditions.

In the 20th century, with the building of the dike that separated the Zuider Zee from the North sea, Amsterdam lost its direct contact with the sea. During the second world war, it is probably most famous for the diary of Anne Frank. In the 1960s, the use of soft drugs was tolerated and so the hippy culture arrived, together with squatting and riots.
