The site of Alton Towers has been occupied since Anglo Saxon times; in the 8th century it was a fortress of the King of Mercia. In the 15th century, the castle was occupied by the Earls of Shrewsbury and remained in their possession until the 20th century.
The grounds were wild until the 18th century when Charles Talbot developed the gardens, including the iconic Chinese Pagoda Fountain, supplied by cleverly arranged lakes, pools and terraces and the Grand Conservatories. Talbot's careful design requirements meant that the Alton Towers Garden was unique and had a character that was totally different to any existing stately homes in the UK. His gardens were eventually opened to the public 40 years after his death. The property passed into the hands of a consortium of local businessmen in the early 1920s, and was requisitioned during the Second World War as an officer cadet training camp. The war office held Alton Towers until 1951 and a year later, the grounds re-opened. Sadly, the house had not been well looked after and was in a poor state of repair. During that era, the grounds played host to travelling fun fair rides, perhaps setting the scene for the development during the 1970s and subsequent decades as a theme park with it's impressive rides such as the ground-breaking 'Corkscrew', 'Black Hole' and 'Nemesis'. Happily, the interesting walks in the gardens survived this development although the popular and incredibly impressive model railway housed in the chapel entrance, constructed in the mid 1950s, was auctioned off in 1993 following the renovation of the chapel.
For corporate clients, Alton Towers today offers the perfect environment for your away day or conference. Corporate parties can enjoy a conference break or a session of team building around the grounds whilst stag, hen or other private parties can do the treasure hunt and enjoy the fun of the rides.
