Despite the controversy over the origin of the name Aberdeen, it is one of the most vibrant of Scotland's major cities ...Aberdeen is probably best known as 'The Granite City' or maybe as a a 70s oil boom-town (it provided the backdrop to the TV series 'Roughnecks'. But there is an awful lot more to it than that. It has a reputation of being a little grey but it's history has been very colourful and will undoubtedly be so in the future. The city has a high student population, higher than the national average and boasts 2 universities, the original, named unsurprisingly the University of Aberdeen was created by the amalgamation of two earlier colleges, Kings College and Marechal College, founded at the end of the 15th and 16th centuries respectively. Aberdeen's and the surrounding area has been settled for about 8000 years but its current prosperity is due to oil and student money; the former industries of the city have either disappeared (like the textile industry) or have been significantly reduced (like the fishing and papermaking industries and whisky). These have left a legacy of interesting buildings that make a treasure hunt around the streets of Aberdeen so interesting. Many of the major buildings were built within the last 200 years. And then there is the unforgettable Union Street ... Despite its reputation as being bland in appearance, Aberdeen has plenty of green open space and the parks and gardens are a source of pride - justifiably so as the city has been awarded the 'Best City' award in the RHS Britain in Bloom competition on numerous occasions. You just might have to visit one or two of these to find the answers to the treasure hunt clues ... Your Aberdeen treasure hunt and scavenger hunts can be written with start and finish locations to suit your needs within the city of Aberdeen itself or out amongst the Aberdeen Angus cattle and stone circles in the surrounding countryside.
